What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy, perhaps the best known of
all holistic therapies, reputed to be at least 6000 years old, is
derived from ‘aroma’, meaning fragrance or smell and
‘therapy’, meaning treatment.
Used by the most ancient civilizations, it is
thought to have begun in Egypt, with the Greeks and Romans continuing
to use aromatic oils both medicinally and cosmetically. Both the
ancient Chinese and Indian (Ayurvedic) cultures make reference too,
to the use of aromatic herbs and massage.
European scientists in the 19th century began
researching the effects of essential oils on bacteria in humans,
and today aromatherapy has found its way into mainstream health,
beauty and ‘High Street’ shops where the use of any
aroma, in any context, is often described as aromatherapy.
Bringing together body massage with the use of
essential oils, which can be very expensive to produce, aromatherapy
delights the senses of touch and smell, and whilst often associated
with relaxation, has a wide range of reported health benefits.
Working with clients generally on a massage couch,
aromatherapists, having usually taken a case history, will work
all over the body using oils carefully selected for the client’s
needs. Essential oils, distilled mostly by steam or water, from
the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots or other elements of a plant,
have a unique ‘signature’ value or therapeutic benefit.
As with all complementary approaches, aromatherapy
is not a ‘cure’ as such, yet its reported successes
range from first aid help with cuts, bruises and indigestion through
to assisting the relief of ‘systemic’ issues such as
inflammation, muscular pain and PMS, as well as offering emotional
assistance with stress, fatigue, anxiety, and fear.
Sessions usually lasts for about an hour and courses
of treatment may be recommended depending on individual needs.
Suitable for all ages, aromatherapy can
offer relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.
Clients, having completed a course of treatment for a specific condition,
many find it beneficial to continue with regular treatments to maintain
health and wellbeing.
